To celebrate the International Year of Camelids 2024, the Perspectives on Pastoralism Film Festival presents short films on camelids – camels, dromedaries, alpacas, llamas, vicunas and guanacos – in tropical areas of Africa, Asia and the Andes.

On 9 March 2024, our perspectives on pastoralism film festival was featured as part of the Food Futures Festival in Ghent! This festival focused on sustainable food production and agro-ecology, provided the perfect setting for our films. We screened a selection of 3 films, followed by a discussion.

The IYRP North America Film Festival team recently called for short films (max. 10 min.) that tell the stories of North American rangelands and the people who live and work there. The selected films connected personal experiences to broader rangeland issues such as sustaining biodiversity, providing ecosystem services, producing livestock sustainably, and enhancing resilience to drought and climate change. The team invited submissions from both amateur filmmakers (students, producers, and other rangeland professionals) and professional filmmakers.

The chosen films were screened during a virtual event at the Society for Range Management (SRM) annual meeting, held from January 28 to February 1, 2024.

Technical sessions include tame pasture and forest health assessment training, invasive species, and plant identification.

The ‘Perspectives on Pastoralism’ Film Festival is back in Brussels for a second edition on 8 December, with a panel of experts from three continents and a photography exhibition. Don’t miss this opportunity to get unique insights into the pastoralist lifestyle and challenges through films, photographs and live testimonials from across the globe.

The films selected for Tropentag 2022 will focus on ecologically appropriate use of natural resources, the rights of pastoralists to continue to use and steward these resources, and the challenges that pastoralists face in maintaining and developing their livelihood systems.

On Tuesday 15 March, a selection of our films were screened at the Studio Skoop in Ghent, as part of the Belmundo Festival. Belmundo Festival is festival in Ghent offering a great variety of activities on international solidarity.

One hour of selected films will be shown on Monday 25 October at 18:20 EAT, followed by a 20-minute discussion.

A selection of films from the First Edition of the Perspectives on Pastoralism Film Festival will be shown. Speakers will contextualise the films and provide updates related to how pastoralists have been impacted by government responses to COVID-19.

On Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 June, our ‘Perspectives on Pastoralism’ film festival was part of the Global Landscape Forum conference on dry land restoration in Africa, just a few days before the start of the UN decade dedicated to ecosystem restoration. Our selection of films offered the audiences the opportunity to learn more about pastoralists and the impressive and biodiverse drylands they know to manage sustainably providing them in their livelihoods. Our film festival took place across 4 sessions of the conference.

On Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 June, our ‘Perspectives on Pastoralism’ film festival was part of the Global Landscape Forum conference on dry land restoration in Africa, just a few days before the start of the UN decade dedicated to ecosystem restoration. This event is organised by the Coalition of European Lobbies for Eastern African Pastoralism (CELEP), of which Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium is the focal point since 2019, in collaboration with the German Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture (DITSL) and Agrecol, Association for AgriCulture & Ecology.

CELEP member organisations Agrecol (Association for AgriCulture and Ecology), DITSL (German Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture) and VSF (Vétérinaires Sans Frontières) Belgium present the Perspectives on Pastoralism Film Festival as part of the Tropentag 2019 conference organised by the Universities of Kassel and Goettingen at the University of Kassel.
