Maira (Colombia) Political representation of pastoralist women, care and labour

Maira Alejandra Quintero Brito and Brittany Bunce

In preparation for the Global Gathering of Pastoralist Women in Kathmandu, Nepal in May 2026, a number of pastoralist women from all around the world were invited to collaboratively make films about issues that are important to them. Maira, from Colombia, discusses how pastoralists are not widely recognized in her country, and the work of pastoralist women are even less known. She argues that there needs to be more political representation of pastoralist women, not just symbolically attending meetings, but structurally integrated. She also explains that because of the multiple roles that women hold as mothers and caregivers, that decisions that they are involved in will likely increase sustainability and community well-being.
