Changing a Landscape to a Lifescape: the Humboldt Ranch

Abbey Kinion

In northeastern Nevada, the Humboldt Ranch is transforming more than 350,000 acres of public and private rangelands through innovative grazing practices. By managing livestock for plant recovery rather than reducing herd size, ranchers have restored streams, revived willow-lined channels, and brought back wildlife from trout to pronghorn antelope. Once eroded gullies are becoming wetlands, turning a landscape into a “lifescape” and offering a compelling vision for sustainable ranching on western rangelands.
